From the CEO: Looking Back, Looking Ahead – Ten Years of Nomodic

Blog | May 25, 2022

It all started in 2012 in the master bedroom of an eleven-hundred square foot bungalow in Calgary. Business plans, designs, and miscellaneous papers were strewn all over the place, but rising from the chaos was an idea: a business with a focus on leaving things better, which was an outside-the-box idea for a construction company. It was a goal (at the time, and to this day) of making life better for occupants of remote workforce accommodations. It was a philosophy based on changing and improving the construction process. It was about listening to the needs of developers and the customers who would eventually occupy the spaces.

Ten years later, ‘leaving things better’ continues to be our core purpose and the driving force behind Nomodic.

Growing from the bedroom to the boardroom, Nomodic has turned ‘leaving things better’ into reality. We’ve provided many accelerated and sustainable building solutions for commercial, healthcare, residential, remote workforce, and hospitality needs across Canada. It’s been an unbelievable journey, and I am proud of the amazing people and partners who have made the journey with us.

One thing I am most proud of is our success in the affordable, supportive, and Indigenous housing spaces. As demand has increased almost exponentially, we continue to make a positive impact in communities across Canada. Already this year, we’ve seen the opening of the Sq’umul’ Shelh Lelum’ supportive housing complex in North Cowichan, B.C., the Heiltsuk Nation triplexes in Bella Bella, B.C., a new twelve-suite housing complex for Pauquachin First Nation on Vancouver Island, and the craning of a six-storey supportive housing complex in Victoria. And the year isn’t even half over!

One of the other ways we’ve achieved success is by educating people on the value of modular and prefabricated construction. While Europe and the UK are still further ahead in terms of the acceptance of offsite construction, we’ve seen the North American market adopt the process on a much larger scale. People’s eyes have been opened to the cost and time savings it provides, the cutting-edge materials and technologies available to clients, the wide selection of innovative and customizable designs, and the benefits for communities and the environment. While we’ve helped educate the industry on the value of offsite construction, we in turn have learned ways to improve our process, offer more choices, and provide greater energy efficiency and sustainability to the projects we build.

At Nomodic, we’ve created a family of like-minded individuals who want to keep making an impact. It’s a great feeling to wake up in the morning knowing that you are part of a brilliant and dynamic team that is looking to accomplish great things in the marketplace. We’ve celebrated the big wins along with the small ones, and I know there will be many more in the years ahead. As we embark on the next ten years, I look forward to building strong communities, and the strong relationships that come with it.

Thank you to all who have been part of this ten-year journey – we wouldn’t be where we are today without your support. Our next adventure is just beginning.

– Kevin Read, Nomodic President and CEO
